In that this email is being sent to members of the Michael E. DeBakey International Surgical Society, there is no need to recount the accomplishments of this great man with whom we all interacted at some time during our training. We have lost an international leader in medicine, teaching and research. His great legacies will live on, not only through his works, writings, and inventions, but also through the thousand upon thousands whom he trained and who then trained others. We are so happy that so many of the Society members were able to participate in honoring Doctor DeBakey and visit with him during our recent Conference in Houston.
In addition to his wife, Katrin, and their daughter, Olga, Doctor DeBakey is survived by sons Denis DeBakey of Houston and Michael DeBakey of Lima, Peru; and sisters Lois and Selma DeBakey, both medical editors and linguists, who worked closely with Doctor DeBakey throughout his career at Baylor College of Medicine.
